Sometimes stupid comments help us look better…Sometimes.

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Stella, an chemical engineer working in Birmingham, wrote us. She explained that she works alongside men mostly and that sometimes, even being brilliantly book smart, they get stupid when it comes to women. She explained that she was at her desk recently and a fellow engineer stopped to talk to her. Stella said, "He had been in a good mood that day and so he was making jokes and making small talk… You know, pretty much just wasting my time."

Then, the office joker really became the office fool. He was in the middle of talking when he bent in towards Stella’s face and said, “Wow, Stella. How did your hair achieve that uncanny vertical reach?”

Being the smart woman that Stella is, she emailed BamaSalons.com and asked what she could do to avoid such a comment in the future.

We consulted with a professional cosmetologist from one of our featured hair salons. She recommended that, "Stella, and anyone with a serious fly-away problem, should use Redken CAT Protein Reconstructing Treatment. CAT will help keep their hair from breaking off near the root. Shampoo the hair, towel dry leaving the hair slightly damp, spray the CAT treatment all over the hair, let the product stay on the hair for ten to fifteen minutes, rinse out the product, and finally condition the hair using Redken’s Smooth Down conditioner."

Want more? Try Redken’s Body Full Shampoo and Conditioner in the shower. Towel dry and massage in Redken’s Extreme Anti-Snap all over your hair. Blow dry immediately after applying the Anti-Snap. This product regimen will boost your hair’s volume and your confidence because you will finally live an entire week without placating that stick-figure show you used to host on your head.

As for having a solution for the office fool? Well… in theory, masking tape over the mouth should work but that’s just in theory of course…

You can find this and more Redken products at Tera Lane Salon & Spa .

What can I do to better explain to my stylist what I want for my hair?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Q: What can I do to better explain to my stylist what I want for my hair? I never feel like I explain myself well enough so that she really understands what I am asking for.

A: First, take time and actually think about what you want. This is your appearance we’re dealing with!

  • What do you like best about your appearance? (eyes, cheeks, mouth?)
  • What do you think would help enhance those features?

Next, look for photographs of celebrities that have features similar to yours. Magazine pictures of them can provide ideas for what could possibly enhance your look. A BamaSalons.com featured salon contributor offers this helpful hint. “If you think you like a hair style in a photograph cover the face of the model and just look at the hair style and ask yourself, ‘Do you still like the hair style?’ Doing this will give you a more honest perspective.” When you do come across hair features you might like for yourself cut them out and save them.

Bring those pictures to your appointment so you can literally show your stylist the style and hair color you want. If you like the bangs in one picture, the length of hair in another picture, and the hair color in yet another photo bring them all to your appointment. Your stylist should look at the pictures with you as you point out and explain what you like about them. Our editors have witnessed some wild examples of where clients have found pictures to bring in. Shall we say, photos that should have been left in the drawer they found them in… but hey, they wanted to show their stylists a specific hair color. Sometimes you h

Tips for Style on a Budget…Nail and Hair Advice

Friday, April 25th, 2008

When your debit card is feeling like it could bounce out of your wallet and financial times get tough your style doesn’t have to suffer. First know this: Stylists have been known to accommodate their clients’ budgets in many ways so don’t hesitate to explain your tight situation. They may have some ideas that will save them some time and can help save you some moo-lah. Below you will find budget friendly beauty ideas that can help keep your appearance first class.

Hair Styles:

Get a dry hair cut in place of the regular shampoo, cut, and style. Get your split ends trimmed, layers shaped up, and bangs slightly shortened without all the fuss of the other stuff. You’ll save your stylist shampoo, conditioner, water, electricity, wear and tear on their styling tools, and time! Alternate your shampoo, cut, and styles (SCS) and Dry cuts every other appointment.

Hair Color:

Get a partial highlight instead of a full highlight. Ask your stylist to highlight the hair around your face and on your crown (top of your head).

WARNING: Always get your hair at least blow-dried when you receive any color service. Many stylists and salons will not guarantee client satisfaction if the client chooses to leave the salon with damp hair because the stylist can not evaluate the final results of the color service. Clients that get home and find themselves unhappy about the results of their hair may also find themselves unhappy with not getting their money back or hair re-done! So, simply ask your stylist, “Will you just blow dry my hair and not style it? I know that my hair must be dry to see the color service results are right but I’m trying to stay within my budget.”

Manicures and Pedicures:

Purchase a top coat and use it in between nail services. If the top coat is good and you’re not soaking your hands in water (like doing lots of dishes or swimming in a pool) your manicures and pedicures should last longer and therefore allow you to extend the time between nail services. Try simply applying the top coat every other day and see for yourself.

Waxing:

Ummmm…get some tweezers. Don’t go to town and tweeze all over the place! Just pluck the rogue hairs you notice have grown in faster than the rest.

I asked my stylist for my formula and she got offended…why?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Q: What’s the big deal about color formulas? I asked my stylist for my formula and she got offended…why? It’s my hair color, right?

A: This is a tough one. We have received emails with similar remarks and questions concerning the “color formulas issue” as we at BamaSalons.com call it. We never mean to intentionally “step on any toes” but when it comes to people and their money it can happen. Regardless of that fact, we still think the “color formula issue” is one that needs to be discussed…so here it goes!

The reason why some stylists won’t share formulas with their clients is pretty much the same reason why a chef won’t disclose the secret ingredients to their popular dishes. A stylist’s technique, experience, and ability to create great color formulas are just a few of the things that determine what their trade is worth. Asking for your hair color formula may offend your stylist simply because that formula is part of what makes their career a career. They received specific training just like any other professional. Even though the formula was created according to your needs the formula ultimately belongs to the creator. However, there may be some exceptions to this rule.

Exception 1 : Your stylist increased their prices.

Stylists are often more willing to accommodate your requests if their increased prices don’t fit into your budget any longer so just tell them! Many understanding stylists will recommend another qualified stylist that can better meet your budget. Stylists may also allow you to purchase your formula when their prices increase.

Exception 2 : Your beauty budget has shrunk.

Stylists understand that money gets tight depending on what happens in our lives because it happens to them also! Don’t ever be embarrassed to explain that you are having difficulty affording their service at the current time. I have heard several stylists say that if they only knew a client was having financial trouble they would have gladly worked within their budget. The last thing your stylist wants is for you to just never come back to them or worse misunderstand your reasoning for why you requested the color formula they have been using on your hair.

Bottom Line : A formula may just be a “formula” to you but to your stylist, a formula is what helps put food on their table. Hopefully looking at this situation in that respect will help grow respect for what makes your stylist great.

Q and A: Plain-Jane gets no game

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Q: Dear BamaSalons,

It’s rare but there are times when I don’t fix or fuss over my hair and my boyfriend always says, “I wish your hair always felt like this.” Well I’m southern and I plan on styling my hair on a the regular but I would like to maintain my hair style and still satisfy my boyfriend’s appetite for “soft, silky, mmm-hmmm, hair". What products could I use to make this a win-win situation?

A: Okay Plain-Jane,

There is no need to sit on the side lines of hotness! There are products that can most definitely give your hair volume, hold, and lasting style…PLUS the, how’d you put it? Mmmm-hmmmm appeal.
