Q and A: My eyelashes broke off! Why did this happen?!

A: Okay. I know it is hard but stop staring in the mirror and studying this tragedy that has devastated your lash line. Staring will not help them grow back faster. Trust me…I know because I have been that girl too.

I was in a state of shock when it happened to me one afternoon. I later said to my friend, “I was trying to fix this mascara clump and the clump won.” The middle lashes, originally located on my right eyelid, organized a strike with the coat of mascara I was applying. They banded together with the mascara and formed a clump. When I attempted to dissolve the situation it got solved for me! The mascara took my lashes with it! I was left with a jagged lash line and a dumbfounded expression I didn’t know my face could make.

As I came to grips with the reality of the situation I felt the need to understand why this had happened! Why God why?! I pulled it together, Googled my situation, and discovered (hey, this was new to me) there are tons of possible reasons someone may lose their eyelashes. Here are some general reasons for why this tragic episode has been known to strike other lashes…

Reason 1 : Your mascara coated your lashes so heavily that even with the gentlest touch they broke off.

Solution : Give your lashes a minute or two before applying additional coats of mascara. A second coat and even a third is sometimes in order but use discretion! I mean c’mon, making a trip to the mailbox may not call for additional coats of mascara…well, unless the postman meeting you there is really hot.

Reason 2 : You rubbed your eyes harder than usual.

Solution : Take it easy on your eyes. They are the most delicate parts of your face! Don’t take out your stress by rubbing your eyes. Take yoga. Count to ten. Just do something in place of pulling at your eyes.

Reason 3 : You imposed a deadly strike on your lashes with an eyelash curler.

Solution : Use the eyelash curler like a lady not a drill sergeant! Your eyelash curler was meant to help accent your complete look by increasing the natural curl of your lashes. The eyelash curler was not invented to make your lashes stand at attention.

Reason 4 : Your lashes are weak because you aren’t getting enough GOOD nutrition.

Solution : Okay. We get it. You’re cutting calories but listen…sometimes cutting calories also means you may be cutting important vitamins and nutrients. Helllooo! Don’t blame your body, including your lashes, when your healthy glow starts burning out. Take responsibility, don’t cut corners, and stay healthy.

Other possible solutions : If you have noticed that your lash line is thinning, you are losing a significant amount of eyelashes, or if you have any eyelash issues that are routinely bothersome…go to a doctor. Any complication you encounter with your eyelashes could be related to problems with allergies, hormonal changes, high levels of stress, or more…so call a medical professional. While you wait patiently for your lashes to be naturally full again there are options that will make the waiting period less vexing.

Option 1: Make an appointment for a professional cosmetologist to apply individual faux lashes. The key is having the lashes applied one at a time by a person who has been trained to do the application. Check out our featured salon listings and discover the professionals that offer individual lash applications.

Option 2: Purchase faux lashes from a professional salon or makeup studio . The quality of the faux lashes is very important. Most beauty professionals can recommend faux eyelash brands that will provide the natural appearance you are looking for. To avoid the "you obviously did it yourself" mistake, make an appointment for a professional to apply the faux lashes. You will have lashes you can be proud of plus you’ll feel more confident when it comes time to touch those babies up because you will understand how to correctly re-apply them.

Option 3: Leave your lash line alone, don’t use your mascara or eyelash curler for a bit, and wait for your natural lashes to grow back.

Bottom Line: Broken lashes can make the best of times, well, the worst of times…fast. When facing (no pun intended) this situation just understand that your lashes will grow back. Chalk the whole thing up as another beauty experience you learned from. You know, like that time you and your friend thought it would be a sinch to highlight your hair at her house after school. Ummm, yeah. Some lessons must be learned the hard way or maybe I should say the tragic way. Either way you get the idea.

Finally, be patient when a mascara clump teases you or stress entices you to ravage your eyes with a violent rub and pull…your lashes will thank you.
