Med Spas: Questions to Ask Before You Book a Session

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

When it comes to these one-stop medical-spa cosmetic-treatment centers there are a few questions you should get answered before you go under a laser, needle, or other medical spa tool. BamaSalons has listed questions below so you can find out what you should expect when you book a med-spa session. Whether you are planning to receive microdermabrasion, exfoliate your skin with a chemical peel, or shallow a scar with a laser treatment asking these simple questions will help know if a particular med spa is the med spa for you.

  • Who is the medical director? They should be at least a physician trained in aesthetics and in the use of lasers if lasers are used in the facility.
  • How often does that physician visit the clinic?
  • Can you make an appointment with the actual physician? You should be able to have the physician at least be present or oversee any procedure.
  • What kind of skin conditions does the med spa treat? There are different types of lasers that are used for different types of services.
  • What is the training level of the person treating you?
  • What are the specialties of this med spa?

Just remember! It’s not rude or inappropriate to inquire about a Med Spa’s credentials and staff qualifications…it’s smart! Whenever you are planning to alter your appearance, especially permanently, it is vital to get the facts. Find out who is doing what plus how and where they learned to do it!

Frocks and Locks: Summer 2008 Trends

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Summer 2008 is bringing the heat…

Feel the hot flash this Summer with these hair style and fashion trends!

Locks (Cuts. Styles. Color.)

Long and Curly
Medium-sized, tight curls is a leading look this summer season.

Blunt Bangs
Blunt bangs are perfect for round and square shaped faces alike! When blunt bangs are cut just over the brow line they offer a more trendy neo-mod look.

Sculpted Bob
The bob has been a popular hairstyle over the recent seasons but Summer 2008 is changing it up just a bit. This Summer, softer versions are taking front and center and moving the super-blunt cuts of Fall 2007 backstage. Pull out those large curlers or turn on your curling iron to acheive this look. A soft side part that covers your forehead offers the finishing touch to your summer style

Twisted Updos
Accent the shape of your face by revealing it! Sculpted buns and twists show off the feminine side of summer. Think "romantic sophistication” when styling your hair this season.

Frocks

Thin belts, head scarves, pencil skirts that are knee length or longer, sequins, metallics, silk jersey and chiffon, hats, layered necklaces. Summer’s colors are orange, rose, lavender, green and silver, the new neutral.

Need some inspiration?

Adapt these New York Fashion Week trends and create your very own personalized summer styles…

  • Dainty lingerie inspired separates
  • White suits
  • One-shoulder dresses
  • Ombres (distinctive dip-dye fabric, in which colors gradually intensify from dark to light) Tie-die accents
  • 70’s Safari (leopard-print dresses, khaki shirtdresses paired with panama hats, belted pantsuits)
  • Simple nude gowns (in buff, beige, or tan shades)
  • Ruffles
  • Boyish blazers paired with girlish skirts (cinched-waist blazers with flirty girlish skirts)
  • Neons and neutrals (intense neon shades paired with more neutral-colored separates)
  • Pastels
  • Polka dots (cocktail dresses, sun dresses, feminine pieces)
  • Dusky gray hues (pairing them with delicate patterns and shimmering materials).

What do we think? We love the ‘boyish blazer paired with a flirty girlish skirt’ fashion but maybe not for Tuscaloosa’s southern belles. All power to the chick that sports that trend though! Send us a pic and we’ll brag about your fashion sense for you! We also love, and would totally wear, those one-shoulder dresses…how freakin’ cute are they?!

Beauty Tips: Match That Look!

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Riding the beauty fence

Being employed in a professional beauty establishment often brings a unique perspective to the beauty industry. The editors of this article have actually worked in salons and have crafted this article to portray the stylist view on matching the looks that clients find in magazines and wish to match.

Matching the Look

“Many times clients will bring in a photo of a celebrity but the celebrity doesn’t resemble the client in any way. Clients may like the hair style but what they really like is how the celebrity looks in the photograph. When a client likes a photograph they should do the cover-up test…Cover up the face of the model and just look at the hair style. Doing this will give the client a more honest perspective as to whether they like the hair style or they like the whole look. If a client likes the whole look…it’s okay! There are plenty of ways to adapt that look and make it their own but they have to be flexible.

Whether it’s receiving a facial wax, allowing eyebrows to grow, or getting professional color services, clients should be open to additional beauty services. Also, clients should never underestimate the power of professional make up techniques! Cosmetics applied by a professional can achieve a look that is similar to the look a client may be so fond of. What’s more? Most make up professionals are glad to share simple techniques with their clients so they can create similar results from home.

Bottom Line : There are many factors clients should consider when it comes to crafting a fabulous appearance. Stylists are here to help clients fine tune their appearance in every way. Take advantage of the services your stylist can offer you!”

What can I do to better explain to my stylist what I want for my hair?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Q: What can I do to better explain to my stylist what I want for my hair? I never feel like I explain myself well enough so that she really understands what I am asking for.

A: First, take time and actually think about what you want. This is your appearance we’re dealing with!

  • What do you like best about your appearance? (eyes, cheeks, mouth?)
  • What do you think would help enhance those features?

Next, look for photographs of celebrities that have features similar to yours. Magazine pictures of them can provide ideas for what could possibly enhance your look. A BamaSalons.com featured salon contributor offers this helpful hint. “If you think you like a hair style in a photograph cover the face of the model and just look at the hair style and ask yourself, ‘Do you still like the hair style?’ Doing this will give you a more honest perspective.” When you do come across hair features you might like for yourself cut them out and save them.

Bring those pictures to your appointment so you can literally show your stylist the style and hair color you want. If you like the bangs in one picture, the length of hair in another picture, and the hair color in yet another photo bring them all to your appointment. Your stylist should look at the pictures with you as you point out and explain what you like about them. Our editors have witnessed some wild examples of where clients have found pictures to bring in. Shall we say, photos that should have been left in the drawer they found them in… but hey, they wanted to show their stylists a specific hair color. Sometimes you h
